Abstract

The synchrotron SIS 300, developed for the Facility for Antiproton an Ion Research (FAIR) project at GSI, will use fast-cycling quadrupole magnets with 45-T/m central gradient; 10-T/m/sec ramp rate, 105-mm aperture, 1-m effective length. The coil consists of 1 layer, which is divided by 3 blocks in one octant. Collars are self-supporting mechanical structure. Integral multipoles are suppressed by central field harmonics in one of them and central and edge field multipoles are suppressed independently in the second one. Thermal and mechanical characteristics of the magnet are presented too. Variants of protection system parameters for the SIS 300 quadrupoles are discussed.

Abstract

One of the main requirements to superconducting magnet is its stability, what can be estimated by means Minimum Quench Energy. MQE of Rutherford-type cables with different resistive coating of composite Cu-matrix NbTi multifilament strands has been measured. The equipment for MQE measurements of short cable samples versus magnetic fields is described. Current through the hairpin sample is created by superconducting transformer; the critical current of the primary winding is 100 A, which allows one to measure MQE of short samples at currents up to 15 kA. Current through the sample is measured with help of Rogowsky coil and integrator. In order to generate the heat disturbance in samples, the miniature heaters are used. The energy, released in heater, is changed step by step consecutively and the threshold energy, which causes quench (i.e. MQE), is found by this way. We measured dependencies of MQE upon the sample currents as well critical currents for the superconducting cables in magnetic fields up to 6.5 T. Experimental study of MQE was performed for 19-strands transposed cables, consisting of 0.85 mm diameter wires with natural oxide, Ni and Cr resistive coatings. A computer code for calculations of MQE in a cable has been created.

Abstract

The OKA experimental complex to produce a separated Kaon beam from U-70 proton accelerator is under construction at State Research Center IHEP. The Cryogenic and Vacuum System (CVS) to keep the radiofrequency separator at operating temperature of 1.8 K is now at the commissioning stage. Different modes of the CVS operation are investigated to determine the most efficient and reliable one. Measures for reaching of the CVS design parameters and increasing the reliability of its operation are described. The experimental values of heat leaks to the CVS elements are given. The modes of the CVS operation in the emergencies are examined. The technological parameters data acquisition and control system is described.
