Abstract

The production of radionuclides for medicine is an important field of application of modern cyclotrons for average energies accelerating light particles (protons and deuterons).

A series of compact cyclotrons, such as the CC-12, the CC-18/9 and the MCC-30/15 intended for the production of photon and positron emitters for SPECT and PET diagnostic centers has been designed and manufactured at the D.V. Efremov Scientific Research Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus. The cyclotrons ensure the acceleration of negative hydrogen and deuterium ions up to the following energies: the ÑÑ-12 – up to 12 MeV (hydrogen ions); the ÑÑ-18/9 – up to 18 MeV (hydrogen ions) and up to 9 MeV (deuterium ions); the ÌÑÑ-30/15 – variable energy: 18÷30 MeV (hydrogen ions) and 9÷15 MeV (deuterium ions). An external injection system is used in these cyclotrons; the beams of accelerated protons and deuterons are extracted by ion stripping on carbon foils.

The main advantage of the aforementioned cyclotrons is an easy access to the devices located inside vacuum chambers by moving apart a part of the magnet to a distance of up to 800 mm along the guides (the median plane of the cyclotron is located vertically).

Successful putting into operation of two CC-18/9 cyclotrons, one in Turky, Finland (2005) and the other in St.Petersburg (2006) allows us to realize a serial production of these accelerators intended for use at PET centers.

The parameters and characteristics of the main units of the aforementioned accelerators are given.

Abstract

The ring sector cyclotron is one of possible basic accelerators to be used in the centers for proton therapy. In our report we present the main parameters of an RC-18/210 ring cyclotron, which uses a CC-18/9 cyclotron as an injector. A layout of the equipment of the center is suggested including separate shielded rooms equipped with gantries for the cancer treatment.

Abstract

One of the main problems of the clinical medicine is to make a timely diagnosis of a decease. Compared to many other examination methods, the radionuclide diagnostics provides most complete and reliable information on pathologies; this method is characterized with a high sensitivity, high-speed analysis and a painless process of patients' examination. The high sensitivity of the radionuclide diagnostics allows a disease to be identified at the initial stage, which is very important for successful treatment. The unique specific feature of the radionuclide diagnostics is a possibility for choosing the most proper procedure of treatment and control of the treatment process.
