Storage ring lattices based on feasible bending magnets using a longitudinally varying field may provide an emittance which is about a factor four lower compared to the mimimum emittance obtained from a homogeneous bending magnet of same deflection angle. However, the resulting lattice configurations require exact matching of the optical parameters. Previous work on the subject is reviewed, two examples for longitudinal gradient bend cells are studied and compared to alternative configurations based on many small homogenous gradient bends.
