THAOR02 | Production of Superconducting Magnets and Cryogenic Systems at IHEP | 146 |
Largest in Russia cryogenic system of 280 W refrigeration capacity at 1.8 K temperature for cooling with superfluid helium of superconducting RF separator for the OKA experimental complex to produce a separated Kaon beam from U-70 proton accelerator was developed and commissioned at Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEP). Experience of the cryogenic system operation and direction of its modernization are discussed. Results of the development of fast-cycling superconducting magnets for the FAIR project (European Research Centre of Ions and Antiprotons, Germany) are presented.

Test Results of SIS 300 Fast-Cycling Superconducting Quadrupole Prototype

IHEP has developed the superconducting quadrupole with a warm aperture of 105 mm, central gradient of 45 T/m, and 10 T/m/s gradient ramp rate for the fast-ramping heavy ion synchrotron SIS 300. This quadrupole has one layer shell-type coil, which is wound by cored 19-strands cable. The superconducting wire for the cable has been developed in Bochvar's institute especially for fast-ramping applications. With aim of reduction of losses in this wire the diameter of NbTi filaments was decreased up to 3 microns and a space around the filaments is filled by high-resistive alloy Сu-0.5%Мn. A cold test of quadrupole was performed. During training the maximum achieved current was 9.4 kA that is 95% of the critical current of the short sample. The maximum current of the magnet remains high at current ramp rate up to 5 kA/s. The AC losses were measured.
