Previous work on the topic has suggested that radiation at such large angles is inconsistent with classical radiation theory because microbunches cannot tilt. Here we show that, when kicked in a quadrupole lattice, microbunches can automatically tilt toward a new direction of propagation. This allows for coherent radiation farther off axis.
