High irradiances of 10²² W/cm² can be achieved with a short focal length beamline when the laser is focused to a spot of w₀ < 5 um. Under this condition, theoretical and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations have shown that protons and helium ions at energies up to several hundred MeV/u can be expected from the interaction between BELLA laser pulses and different targets. High ion energies*, low energy spread with high controllability and stability, a new generation of ion accelerators using high performance laser-driven ion beam has numerous potential applications such as injectors for conventional accelerators, radiation therapy, as well as high energy density laboratory physics and material science studies. We will present a preliminary ion optics design to collect, transport, and focus the ions generated from the laser-driven ion accelerator, and beam dynamics results using the ion distribution from the PIC simulation.
