One of the features of this statistical object is that probability distribution of the radiation pulse energy follows gamma distribution. Parameter of this distribution is the number of modes in the radiation pulse which is equal to inverse deviation of the energy fluctuations. Statistical analysis of the radiation energies measured within different spatial apertures allows us to determine the number of longitudinal and transverse modes. In addition, knowledge of the saturation length allows to determine the duration of the lasing part of the electron bunch, photon pulse duration, and coherence time**. Knowledge of the number of transverse modes allows one to determine the degree of transverse coherence. In this report we present theoretical background of the proposed method and experimental results obtained at free electron laser FLASH.
