ICALEPCS'99 CD-ROM USER GUIDE Welcome The ICALEPCS'99 CD-ROM contains the complete Proceedings of the seventh International Conference on Accelerator and Large Experimental Physics Control Systems, held in Trieste, Italy, from the 4th to the 8th of October 1999 and hosted by Sincrotrone Trieste. The Proceedings are Adobe Acrobat(r) PDF documents and the CD-ROM comes complete with Adobe Acrobat Reader(r) for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX for you to install on your machine. You can quickly locate the information you want by using Boolean full-text searches or browsing the Table of Contents, Author Index and Keyword List and then view and print the documents that interest you. The Proceedings are also available in book form and on the WWW at http://www.elettra.trieste.it/ICALEPCS99 or at the Joint Accelerator Conference Website (JACoW) at http://www.cern.ch/accelconf. In addition to the contents of the book, the CD-ROM version includes also the presentations given at the Conference Tutorials, Industrial Seminars and additional photos. Installing the Acrobat Reader The first thing you need to do before using the CD-ROM is to install the Acrobat Reader for your machine. The ACROBAT directory on the CD-ROM contains Acrobat Reader 4.0 with Search for Windows 95/98/NT/2000, Macintosh PPC and UNIX (SUN Solaris Sparc, HP-UX, IRIX, AIX and Digital UNIX), Acrobat Reader 4.0 for LINUX and SUN Solaris x86. If you already have a previous version of the Reader, you should install the latest version provided with the CD-ROM. Attaching the Search Index The first time you run Acrobat Reader with Search you need to attach the ICALEPCS'99 search index. Place the ICALEPCS'99 CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive, launch your Acrobat Reader and choose Search>Select Indexes from the Edit menu to bring up the Index Selection dialogue box. Click on the Add button to bring up the Add Index dialogue box, then select the file INDEX.PDX in the root directory of the CD-ROM and click Open. You will see that "ICALEPCS'99" is now listed under Available indexes of the Index Selection dialogue box. Click on the OK button to verify the attachment. The ICALEPCS'99 search index will be attached automatically on future uses of your Acrobat Reader as long as the ICALEPCS'99 CD-ROM is in your CD-ROM drive. For more information on searching see "Getting Started". Getting Started Once installed, your Acrobat Reader contains comprehensive online help on all of its features under the Help menu. The Adobe WWW Server (http://www.adobe.com) also provides detailed technical information on Acrobat products. Here are some useful tips to help get you started: Browsing > Place the ICALEPCS'99 CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. > Launch your Acrobat Reader. > In Acrobat Reader, choose Open from the File menu and select the file INDEX.PDF in the root directory. This file is the hub of the ICALEPCS'99 CD-ROM and contains links to all of the main sections of the Proceedings Book, to the presentations given at the Tutorials and Industrial Seminars and to additional Conference photos. Conference articles can be located by browsing the Table of Contents, Author Index or Keyword List. Searching Adobe Acrobat Readers 4.0 with Search are supplied with the ICALEPCS'99 CD-ROM. Before using the search for the first time you need to do two things. First, attach the ICALEPCS'99 search index (see "Attaching the Search Index" under "Installing the Acrobat Reader"). Second, look at your Search Preferences by selecting Preferences>Search from the File menu to bring up the Acrobat Search Preferences dialogue box. All the PDF files on the ICALEPCS'99 CD-ROM contain Title, Subject, Author and Keywords details which are held in the General Info fields of each file. Check the Show Fields option on the Search Preferences dialogue box if you want the option of searching on these fields - these searches will be faster than Full Text Searches.
