A review is given of the different compression and linearisation schemes which have been adopted or proposed for ERL facilities. Of particular interest is the interaction between the points at which compression is needed and the overall scheme for the compression, and how issues such as wakefields, CSR, and cost can affect the design that is chosen. Examples are given of both low-energy accelerators where single-stage schemes with sextupole linearisation are preferred, and of higher-energy accelerators where both 3rd-harmonic and sextupole schemes have been used. More exotic schemes for manipulation are also discussed.
