FERMI@ELETTRA is the new VUV FEL currently under construction at ELETTRA, Trieste. Based on the seeded FEL concept the timing and synchronization play a fundametal role for this new machine. Being ps and fs lasers deeply embedded in the electron and photon production processes and dealing with electron an bunch that will go down to 0.17 ps FWHM, the global requirement on timing is to provide a jitter free reference signal at the <10 fs RMS level. In this talk we present the general requirements along with the block diagram of the FERMI timing system as it has been defined in the Technical Optimization Study (collaboration with LBNL and MIT) ending June 2006. Furthermore the developements on-going at ELETTRA in the frame of a European project and of an international collaboration are also presented.
