Today around 12 generations of legacy control system types are in operation in the accelerator complex, having significant impact on operability, support and flexibility for the converter controls electronics. Over the past years a new generation of modular controls called RegFGC3 has been developed by CERN's power conversion group. The goal is to provide a new standardised and cost effective control solution, supporting the largest number of converter topologies in a single platform. This will reduce the maintenance cost by decreasing the variety and diversity of control systems whilst simultaneously improving the operability of power converters. This paper describes Thyristor-based power converter controls as well as the on-going design and realization, focusing on functional requirements and first implementation.
